A troll thread births Monā

Someone posts an ASCII cat on Japan's mega-forum 2channel to mock users with too much free time. Another user copies it back with a speech bubble reading omae mo nā — "you too". The name sticks, and the cat becomes one of Japan's most reposted memes.

An anonymous poster calling himself Mr. Watanabe — a nod to Satoshi Nakamoto — announces Monacoin on 2channel. He insists it is not a security, just points inside a network, a game currency like the ones in Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Nobody listens. It takes on a life of its own.

Japan's first cryptocurrency goes live

Monacoin launches as a Litecoin fork, named and logo'd after the cat. No premine, nothing set aside for the creator — devs and users mined on identical terms from block one. Later it swaps to the Lyra2REv2 algorithm to keep mining on ordinary GPUs instead of industrial ASIC farms.
